Cause of Death: Melantha was 14 1/2 years old when she died.  She was getting up there in years!  She just seemed to wear out and go into decline, her heart started to fail her and she just couldn't hang on anymore.  She was a sweet angel until the very end.  I found her this morning, it looks like she died in her sleep. 

14 years is not long enough with a chinchilla like this.   The rancher I bought her from said that she rarely had chins live past 12 or 13.   I am very glad that I got that extra year or two with this girl.  Some chins live longer than others, but inevitably they wear out and pass on.  This is something that is becoming increasingly difficult for me because the chins here are starting to reach their early to late teen years and I have to prepare myself for losing each one to old age.  This happens with chinchillas even though they are such long lived rodents in comparison to other pocket pets.

Melantha, you will always be loved!  I miss you so much baby girl.
